LJ Interests meme results

1. big band music:
   Despite the fact that my parents met and married in the 1960's, their romance was like something out of World War II. I grew up dancing in the kitchen with my father to Glen Miller and other big band recordings. Never got over it.
2. classical fencing:
   When I first started watching classic Hollywood-medieval films, I wanted to wear the pretty dresses AND fight in the duels. The best description I have ever heard of fencing is "ballet with intent to kill".
3. duran duran:
   I discovered them in 1980 (I was ten). I thought they looked weird, but I loved the way they sounded. I got a bit older and decided they were "hawt". Been in love ever since.
4. gingersnaps:
   Best cookie ever. Enough said.
5. joy division:
   As much as I love Duran Duran, I can't be that happy all the time. Joy Division appeals to my darker nature whithout decending into monotonous droning.
6. modern urban fantasy:
   This is the best phrase I can come up with to describe my favorite type of fiction, which also happens to be the type I write most often. Neil Gaiman, Charles de Lint and JK Rowling all fit in this category.
7. renaissance festivals:
   Well, duh.
8. sex and the city:
   I love NYC. This show loved NYC. Reason enough.
9. the diamond age:
   aka "A Young Girl's Primer" by Neal Stephenson. I think he was going for refined cyberpunk, but what he wrote was a book about nurturing. It's cool.
10. victoriana:
    I like calling cards, and evening gloves, and the fact that every movement of a fan or every flower in an arrangement could have a specific meaning. In short, I like the genteel veneer that the Victorians applied over the reality of their society. And I like bustles.
