The car is mother, the car is father...

It's Thursday, which makes it the perfect day to post this -
OMG! WOW! What a fantastic way to end a series!!!!! (Almost.)
That's right, I'm talking about Supernatural.
Eric Kripke is not from Lawrence. So I must applaud him for the nice use of our most well-known local legend. Yes, that cemetary. All though I really shouldn't be surprised, considering how well the show has made use of other urban legends, as well as blending the Winchesters into the mix.
I must also give him props for writing what is very nearly one of the best series-ending episodes I have seen. I have to say very nearly, because while he created a perfect ending to the show, the CW wanted another season. So you know what that means.
Not that I object to the idea of a sixth season of cute boys in hot car fighting the monsters that are real under the bed. I just would have liked it to be earlier in their story arc. So that it could have been more of just that. No angels/demons/God/predestination/recovery-from-same needed. Just two brothers fighting monsters and occasionally looking for their Dad. The same way that the X-Files worked best when all you needed to know was "Two FBI agents investigate weird shit. He's a believer, she's a skeptic - GO!" Oh, and as Electric Boogaloo would say, I could have done with a bit less man-struating all over the place.
I will definitely miss Cas' bumbling, I-don't-get-you-humans act though. And Crowley the "helpful" demon.
Now, for the rest what I loved about Season Five (and a bit of what I didn't):
"The Real Ghostbusters" - Hooray for mocking your fans! And for doing it well! And, kindly.(Not really the show's fault - but all the "Wincest" 'shippers? They can bite me. I'm as much about pretty boys kissing as the next gal, but the Sam and Dean characters are BROTHERS. People, please, give it a rest. That's just...yuck...I mean...yuck.)
"Dark Side of the Moon" - Hooray for the return of Ash! And the damned funny bit when he talks about how many times the brothers have been through the place.
"Hammer of the Gods" - Hooray for acknowledging other pantheons in your universe. Also, I LOVED Kali's belly-chain of silver skulls. (I'm not sure how pleased the real Kali would be about having a major symbol of her power and authority reduced to a stripper-belt, but it looked really cool.)
"Two Minutes to Midnight" - I can't hooray - it was too spooky - but beautifully played. Deaths musical introduction, and his meal with Dean, were tonally perfect.
"Swan Song" - The End. And it really should have been. And I liked it. Making the episode an ode to the Impala was brilliant. Showing us a Lucifer who was truly loved his brother was a great touch. And I know that Buffy went on for another two seasons after she died, but frankly, she only did it once. Sam and Dean have both died and come back so many times that we were all beginning to feel a bit blasé about it. For it to actually be permanent - for Sam's sacrifice to be grown-up and full of the hope that his brother could finally have a shot at a 'normal' life - was beautiful and sad, just the way it should have been. Ah well.
Also - Hooray! The Writer IS God! :)
Troubles -
The addition of the third brother was an interesting twist, but it happened too late in the series, and too close to the end, for me to react to him as anything other than a convenient plot device. They allowed him to die and left him behind so often that it undercut the 'family first' message for me, just a bit.
I'll say it again. Overall, way too much MANSTRUATING.
And - WTF is up with Sam appearing under the lamp post right at the end?! When Dean got dragged off by hell hounds he was gone all summer. Sam pushes Lucifer and Michael into hell and is back by the end of the episode? Seriously? WTF! You already announced that there would be a Season 6 - it's not like fans are going to miss that fact! ARGH!
In the long run though, I cannot dislike a show that loves its car this much. Yes, I have a MASSIVE CRUSH on the Impala, too. And I'm not alone. She even has fan sites here on LJ!

Be seeing you.
