Hmmm, what have I been doing? Work keeps me busy, and I try to write in what little spare time I have. Other than that...
Last week we watched a couple of films which both turned out to be better than expected; Harsh Times and Blood Diamond. That the acting was quality didn't really come as a surprise, since one features Christian Bale and the other Leonardo diCaprio. What did surprise me, pleasantly, was that both films managed to tell their stories in shades of grey, rather than black and white, and included the deaths of characters who "deserved" to die, instead of having them cause the deaths of those who didn't deserve it.
The weekend looked like this:
Friday night we went out to Free State Brewery with some old friends of mine from high school, instigated by my friend Geoff who was visiting from Chicago. It was one of those "I'm only in town for one night, so let's get everyone I know together for dinner, even though most of them don't know each other" events. Fortunately, the people involved were both interesting and fun to talk to, so the one thing the evening was not full of were awkward silences.
gmskarka graciously agreed to accompany me, even though he knew absolutely no one else, and ended up talking about work, in the form of possible distribution for National Vampire, Geoff's documentary about vampire culture in the US. It was a very good time, and I would have enjoyed a longer evening getting to know the rest of the group, but we had to be up early on Saturday, so we were good little grown-ups and cut out at about ten.
Saturday we were up early so Gareth could put some life on Mars and I could drive out to pick up the teenager at the airport (from a Spring Break visit to her mom and younger siblings), which meant that I got to indulge in a nice drive on a gorgeous morning with Amy Winehouse and a groovy spy mix CD alternating as my backing soundtrack. Saturday afternoon we had friends over for an Issue 1 game session of Mutants and Masterminds and ended the evening by inserting the first couple episodes of Black Books into their brains. The show has absolutely nothing to do with super heroes, but it is a must see if you have ever worked in a book shop, or have a special affinity for books...or drunkards.
Sunday, we slept in before Gareth went back to Mars, and I spent the afternoon working in the yard. I transplanted a really small tree from the front flower bed to further out in the lawn. It was the first time I've ever tried something like that, so I hope it takes, but I'm a bit concerned because one of its major looking roots had already extended under the sidewalk and I just couldn't get far enough under the walk to dig it out all the way. We'll see what Miracle Grow tree food and plenty of rain can do for it, I guess. The rest of my afternoon was filled by pulling up the stakes and trunk guards from our two other trees, weeding the flower bed, and actually planting flowers in it. Mowing the lawn will have to wait until we have access to a working mower again, hopefully sooner than later. I finished up just in time to get cleaned up before
radcliffe came over to watch the last two episodes of Rome.
Ah Rome, how I shall miss thee. HBO pretty much hits it out of the park with every drama that they produce these days, beginning with The Sopranos. We didn't get into Six Feet Under, but The Sopranos, Deadwood, Carnivale, Rome and The Wire have all made for excellent viewing. (Okay, maybe Carnivale wasn't quite as excellent as everything else - I admit it, I have a thing for Clancy Brown.) The only downside is that it's annoying to have to pay for an entire premium satellite package when we really only watch two of the channels.
This week has been taken up with work and continuing steps in re-building the bionic husband. After months of high-level worry about his health, we're finally entering a more relaxed control phase, with doctor's appointments every few months instead of every other week. He tires somewhat easily due to the whole "still healing a giant hole in his leg" thing, but things are slowly getting better. The skin graft has finally stuck down everywhere with only a couple of "seam lines" raw enough to blister.
gmskarka even demonstrated his holes new found use as a cup holder over the weekend. :)
My evenings are currently full of paper. I've been going through boxes of old paperwork, getting things filed and sorting a lot out to be recycled/pitched. It will probably take the rest of this week to get through everything that can be ditched, but a big part of that problem was that papers were randomly scattered throughout the house with no ryhme or reason. Now most all of it is in the same place, so I can cull everything that's wildly out of date or makes the question "Why did I keep this?" stray across my brain pan.
And that's about it for now.
