Every once and a while I am reminded that this is, in fact, a service industry job. I had a meeting this morning with my supervisor and our department head, where the D.H. made it quite clear that in the near future, in order to process requests submitted over the weekend in a more timely manner, everyone will be expected to start shifting their schedule around so that we will have one or two people working over the weekend, taking our office out of its current 8 - 5/5-day schedule on a permanent basis. This means that each of us will work a weekend day, and then have a weekday off sometime during that pay period, on a rotating schedule of about six weeks. I HATE those sorts of schedules, because invariably, my weekend plans always end up being the same weekends that I am supposed to work, so I have to hassle with changing my schedule around with someone else and it's always a big mess. Bleh. And there is a big chunk of my year where I will have to coordinate everything so that I can have the run of KCRF off. Again, bleh. I stopped working retail because if I couldn't work for myself, I at least wanted a business hours schedule.

What made it even more aggravating was the passive-aggresive way that he told me about it. There were a lot of phrases like "we think everyone will like having a weekday off to take care of their personal business" and "we'll start with whoever wants to volunteer". All of which was accompanied by conversational pauses that seemed to be waiting for me to fill them with things like "That sounds great!" or "When can I start?!"...I didn't of course. But I'm going to have to work on weekends eventually. Ugh.

Library politics...grumble...
