New book answers why men have nipples
Why? Because in my grade school sex ed class, this was the question I asked the school nurse, and she didn't have an answer. Granted, the answer in this book is fairly mundane and about what you would expect;
And why do men have nipples?
While only females have mammary glands, we all start out in a similar way in the embryo, the authors explain. The embryo follows a female template until about six weeks, when the male sex chromosome kicks in.
Men, however, have already developed nipples.
...and I seem to remember that my question was more along the "Do they serve any purpose?" sort of thing. Still, one would have hoped that she could at least have known this. Instead, she got flustered and embarrassed and then avoided the question and went on to someone else.
And people wonder why we have problems with teen pregnancy. Sigh.
