It's Snowing!
Nov. 30th, 2006 01:11 pmI'm at work. At least I get to leave at 4 today. Sigh. Maybe earlier if the snow seems bad enough, but I do not live in hope on this matter.
While I'm here, here's some stuff I've read recently:
Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden. Not my favorite. Yet more proof, if there were any doubt before, that I am so not the target audience of Oprah's book-of-the-month-club. The writing isn't bad really, it's just not very interesting. What bugged me the most is that the book isn't a 'real' memoir. It's entirely fiction, and when I compare that to the real-life histories of courtesans that I've read, it just falls flat. In the credits, Golden thanks a former geisha who helped with his research, and I found myself wishing that I could read her life story. Even if all the names were changed, the real history of a real geisha would make for some compelling reading.
In other books,
gmskarka and I picked up the Jason Bourne series by Robert Ludlum, and I devoured The Bourne Identity in a couple of days. Umm, wow. I love spy thrillers, and these are top-of-the-line spy thrillers. I'm forcing myself not to pick up the next one so that I can focus on some research I need to be doing, and so that they won't be over with as quickly. He only wrote three - so far. *EDIT - fingers crossed that the newer ones by Eric VanLustbader are up to snuff.*
